Walk through the Bandhas
Translated as ‘bind’, ‘bond’, ‘bound for’ or even ‘to go somewhere’
Dona Holleman compares to a cyclone or whirlwind where the action takes place at the periphery trapping and compressing energy towards the centre. When the energy is compressed towards the centre it is consequently pushed upwards. Within the body these energy pockets (bandhas) gather in places where there is an arch structure of bones usually with a ligament floor.
The sole of the foot = Pada bandha
The pelvic diaphragm = Uddiyana bandha
The arch of the lower ribs, the thoracic diaphragm = Uddiyana bandha
The arch of the jaw bones with the floor of the tongue = Jalhandara Bandha
The palm of the hand with the ligament plate of the palm
These are the most used bandhas in Yoga but there are many more throughout the body working to ‘connect’ energy lines.
* Tadasana in pairs cupping instep and lifting into it by sucking up the lower spring joint
* Sitting back to back with partner and rooting down buttock bones and lifting the pelvic floor and arms connecting through bandhas. Try balancing on buttocks with partner supporting from behind.
* Uddiyana Bandha Kriya
* Standing against wall creating the arms and shoulder heads as in Sarvangasana performing Uddiyana bandha to connect with Jalhadara bandha.
* Virabhadrasana 3 in pairs. Theraband in hands opening shoulders, partner with pole for alignment awareness
